Master's Programme Committee for Mathematics and Operations Research 7/24

The last meeting of the year was held on the 7th of December. The first agenda was the approval of master’s thesis grade proposals. Noteworthily, one evaluation was left on the table and thus the grade proposal was not accepted. This was due to ambiguity with the suggested grade. Overall there were 7 accepted grade proposals.

In addition to approval of the grade proposals, there was discussion on the Education Network on Inverse Problems contract studies. Namely, are the courses being offered suitable for the Master’s Programme in Mathematics and Operations Research and whether they fit into the optional courses of the majors and/or the elective studies of the programme. It was discussed that when the next curriculum is being done, these courses could be considered. There was a consensus that the network will be more beneficial for other universities with more limited course options. For now, the courses were approved as electives.

The translations of major and minor names into Finnish and Swedish were briefly discussed. They were mostly satisfactory, but there were some translation issues to Swedish.

As part of the thesis submission and evaluation process, starting in January 2025, a Turnitin report will be automatically generated for Master’s level theses returned for evaluation, grading, and archiving. The supervisor and student will have access to this report through Student Success Hub/MyStudies. An AI report produced by an AI tool will also be included in the supervisor’s report to assist the supervisor in identifying text that might have been produced by AI. There was some discussion about how this will be executed in practice, with the School of Business having already implemented this.

In addition, the proposals for TEK and SCI Master’s thesis awards 2024 will be decided with the exact deadline not yet known.

Lastly, there was discussion about the overall happiness with the master’s programme results for the year. The number of theses completed has been high during 2024 and there was interest for many statistics about them.

The next meeting of the Master’s Programme Committee for Mathematics and Operations Research will be held on 28.1.2025.
