Tämänkertaisessa PAK:n kokouksessa käsiteltiin opetussuunnitelmiin, ohjelmiin ja ohjelmien hakuprosesseihin tehtäviä muutoksia. Kokouksen lopussa tutkittiin myös SCI:n kandidaatti ja maisterihakukohteiden tilastoja viime keväältä.
Opetussuunnitelmiin hyväksytyt muutoksista olivat pieniä. Fysiikan maisterikursseihin kursseihin hyväksyttiin yksi muutos koskien PHYS-E0546 DFT-kurssia, jonka opetus varmistettiin syksylle 2023. PAK on Perustieteiden korkeakoulun hallintoelin, jossa hyväksytään pääasiassa muista komiteoista tuotuja asioita eli esimerkiksi tämä opetukseen liittyvä muutos tuli ensin hyväksyä teknillisen fysiikan maisterineuvostossa.
Muiden laitoksen kursseihin vahvistettiin seuraavat muutokset
- CS-A1113 – Basics of Programming Y1 -kurssia luennoi jatkossa Timo Kiravuo
- CS-C4010 – Introduction to psychology/Johdatus psykologiaan -kurssia luennoi jatkossa Sari Kujala ja kurssin kieli vaihtuu englannista suomeen. Lisäksi kurssi rajattaan vain teknillisen psykologian lukijoille.
- CS-E5890 Statistical Genetics and Personilized Medicine sekä TU-E6160 Growth Hacking siirtyy hyväksytty/hylätty -arviointiin.
Lisäksi vahvistettiin uusi kurssi FITeching ICT-tarjontaan: CS-EJ4404 Johdatus kryptografiaan.
Seuraavaksi kokouksessa käytiin läpi ja lopulta vahvistettiin Perustieteiden korkeakoulun tohtoriohjelman ja kansainvälisten kaksoistutkinto-ohjelmien valintakriteerit sekä eri maisteriohjelmien akateemiset arviointiperusteet. Keskustelua heräsi etenkin tohtoriohjelman hausta liittyen yliopiston rooliin hakuprosessissa. Yliopistolla vaikuttaa olevan halua yhtenäistää eri korkeakoulujen hakukäytäntöjä. SCI:llä on ollut omanlaisensa jatkuva hakuprosessi, mitä pidettiin toimivana ja sitä ei tarpeettomasti haluttaisi muuttaa. Yhtenä perusteena koulukohtaisille hakuprosesseille pidettiin sitä, että SCI:lle otetaan määrällisesti paljon tohtorikoulutettavia suhteessa esimerkiksi CHEM:iin tai ENG:iin.
Viimeiseksi kokouksessa käsiteltiin muita asioita. Ensimmäisenä todettiin Tampereen yliopiston hyväksyneen erillisvalinnan tekniikan polkuopinnoista. Polkuopinnoista löytyy enemmän tietoa esimerkiksi tämän vuoden aikaisemmista PAK:n kokousten referaateista. Käytännössä Aalto ja TY yhdessä järjestävät polkuopinnot, mutta siihen kuuluvasta erillishausta on mahdollista päästä opiskelemaan vain Tampereelle.
Viimeisenä asiana kokouksessa tutustuttiin DIA-valinnan pisterajoihin vuonna 2022 sekä tilastoihin maisteriohjelmien ja englanninkielisen kandidaattiohjelman valinnoista. Englanninkielisen kandidaattiohjelman kevään SAT-pisterajat huomioitiin hyvin korkeiksi kansainvälisellä mittapuulla vertautuen samalle tasolle esimerkiksi Yhdysvaltojen Ivy league yliopistojen kanssa.

Todays, academic Committee meeting discussed changes to curricula, programs, and program application processes. At the end of the meeting, the statistics of SCI’s bachelor’s and master’s applications from last spring were examined.
The changes approved to the curricula were minor. One change to physics master’s courses was approved regarding the PHYS-E0546 DFT course, the teaching of which was confirmed for autumn 2023. The Academic Committee is a governing body of the School of Science and mainly approves matters brought in from other committees. For example, this teaching-related change had to be approved first by the Master’s Committee for Engineering Physics.
The following changes were confirmed to the courses of other departments
• CS-A1113 – Basics of Programming Y1 course will in the future be lectured by Timo Kiravuo
• The CS-C4010 – Introduction to psychology course will be taught by Sari Kujala and the language of the course will change from English to Finnish. In addition, the course is limited only to readers of engineering psychology.
• CS-E5890 Statistical Genetics and Personalized Medicine and TU-E6160 Growth Hacking will move to pass/fail evaluation.
In addition, a new course was confirmed for FITech ICT: CS-EJ4404 Introduction to Cryptography.
Next, the meeting examined and finally confirmed the selection criteria for the doctoral program and international double degree programs of the School of Science, as well as the academic evaluation criteria for the various master’s programs. Discussion arose especially about the application for the doctoral program regarding the university’s role in the process. The university seems to want to integrate the practices of different schools of the university. SCI has had its own continuous application process, which was considered functional and shouldn’t needlessly be changed. One basis given for the school-specific application processes is the fact that SCI receives significantly more doctoral students than CHEM or ENG for example.
Finally, other matters were discussed in the meeting. First, it was stated that Tampere University has accepted a separate application process for engineering pathway studies. More information about pathway studies can be found, for example, in the reports of academic committee meetings from earlier this year (in Finnish only). In practice, Aalto and Tampere University will jointly organize the pathway studies, but it is only possible to be accepted as a degree student to Tampere from the linked application process.
The last thing shown in the meeting was the point limits for DIA joint application in 2022, as well as statistics of selections for master’s programs and the English-language bachelor’s program. The spring SAT score limits for the English-language bachelor’s program were considered to be very high by international standards, being comparable with, e.g., the score limits of Ivy league universities in the United States.
